Working directly with the National Park Service, JBrennon Construction proudly led a comprehensive historic preservation project at the iconic Lookout Mountain Visitor’s Center. Originally constructed in the 1930s and last renovated in 1985, the facility is home to “The Battle Above the Clouds” by James Walker—one of America’s most cherished historical paintings.
JBrennon’s scope of work focused on the rehabilitation of the restrooms and vestibule areas, with special attention to preserving the building’s historic fabric. As part of the historic preservation effort, JBrennon completed critical mechanical, electrical, and HVAC system upgrades, directly improving the temperature and humidity control systems for the "Painting Room" and other public zones. This was crucial for protecting sensitive artworks and enhancing visitor comfort.
Interior improvements included refreshed vestibules, updated bathroom fixtures and finishes, and supplemental structural reinforcements to the original roof and rafter framework. Notably, JBrennon successfully matched and blended stucco patching to preserve the look and feel of the original 1930s construction—an essential detail in maintaining architectural authenticity.
The project was completed while keeping the visitor center 100% operational, showcasing JBrennon’s ability to deliver high-quality results with minimal disruption. With full cooperation from the park, the team completed all work one month ahead of schedule, setting a benchmark for excellence in historic preservation construction. Should your organization or historic preservation society need the care and quality necessary to prosecute a similar project, please contact JBrennon by completing its Project Evaluation Form.
